Off-grid solar system
It was a voluntary project managed by my wife to help Rachen Nunnery in Tsum Valley, Nepal for designing and building an off-grid solar system.
The Rachen Nunnery has been a safe place for young girls in Tsum Valley who seek for shelter. The Nunnery does not only provides the protection, but also offer free education too these children. The children have the opportunity to attend high education if they excel the learning in Rachen Nunnery.
After the 2015 Nepal earthquake, my wife have found it is important to build an off-grid solar system for Rachen Nunnery kichen, so that the young nuns have more time to spend in their learning, instead of going out to search for fire woods.
The initial project span across 2 years due to administrative process with first completion in 2016. Some equipment has been upgrade in 2018, for reliability concern. The batteries have been recently replaced, in 2024.
The designed off-grid solar system has theoretical 6400 Whr of power, with 24 x 120 Ah maintenance free lead acid batteries. Victron solar chargers and invertors are installed during 2018 upgrade.
The team has members from NGO, business man, experience electrician and myself. It was a fun, fruitful and challenging project.
